Daoism

Municipal Historical and Cultural Heritage Protection Unit

Guangzhou has two Daoist rites: Sanyuan Temple and Chunyang Daoist Temple. A saying is very popular among Daoists in Guangzhou, which goes "Choices of Worship, Sanyuan Temple in north and Chunyang Daoist Temple in south". Chunyang Daoist Temple was built in 1826, the sixth year of Emperor Daoguang's reign in the Qing Dynasty, in honor of Lv Chunyang by Daoist priest advocacy and astronomer Li Mingche.

Hall of Divine Inspiration is the hall to enshrine and worship Ling Guan dictating human souls. At its early stage, the Daoism considered Heaven, Earth and Water as the three spheres, the gods in charge of which are called Heavenly God, Earth God and Water God. Later, Heaven, Earth and Man were reconsidered as the three spheres. Man is the soul of the universe; therefore the god in charge of man is called "Lingguan". This is a kind of evolution of the Daoism and also a new touch of humanities added to the mysterious Daoism.

The main hall of this Daoist temple is the magnificent Chunyang Hall, in the middle of which sits the worshipped gilt statue of Lv Chunyang, one of the legendary eight immortals and one of the five founding fathers of the Quanzhen School of Daoism according to Chinese folklores. In ordinary Daoist temples, the Hall of Founder Lv Chunyang is usually the attached hall, but in this temple, the main hall is named after "Chunyang" the Founder.

Behind the Chunyang Hall is Chaodou Platform, an observatory built to observe changes in weather and the stars by Li Mingche when compiling Chorography of Guangdong-Summary for Land. It is the only ancient observatory existing today in Guangzhou.
