National Key Historical and Cultural Heritage Protection Unit
Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel was established in 1890 for brethren of the French Consulate in Guangzhou, and covers an area of 839.75 square meters. The chapel got its name because of the statue of the Lady of Lourdes on the Our Lady Mount on the south of its garden.
In November 1996, the Shamian architectural complex was identified as part of the National Key Historical and Cultural Heritage Protection Unit by the Sate Council. Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel was on the list.
Before the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, the priests of the Chapel were mostly foreign missionaries with only few of Chinese heritage.. On the eve of the establishment of the PRC, Chinese priest Chen Huimin acted as the priest of the Chapel.
