It has an outstanding history which spans across 1,400 years. It is one of the "Top Four Buddhist Temples" in Guangzhou, alongside Haitong Temple, Guangxiao Temple, and Hualin Temple. It was built in 537 AD in the 3rd year of King Datong of Liang Kingdom in Southern Dynasty.

Flower Pagoda (Six Banyan Pagoda)

Flower Pagoda is the most featured architecture preserved to date in Liurong Temple (Six Banyan Temple), which was originally named Baoyan Sarira Pagoda and was built together with Baoyan Temple in 537. In the early years of Song Dynasty, it burnt down. In 1806, the first year of Emperor Yuanyou's Reign in Song Dynasty, it was rebuilt and took 11 years to complete. Inside the Flower Pagoda were one thousand Buddha statues, thus it changed its name to Qianfo (one thousand Buddha) Pagoda. It was made of bricks and woods. Today, engravings of Northern Song Dynasty can still be found

A huge copper cylinder towers from the bottom of the Flower Pagoda to its top floor, on which the bronze statues of one thousand Buddha are engraved. The copper cylinder and pagoda top weigh 5,000 kilograms in total. The Pagoda is 9 stories tall by its outward appearance. On each floor, there are blindstories, totaling the pagoda to 17 stories. The blindstories serve for going up and down and the clear layers are for passageways and ventilation. There are tricks when climbing the pagoda. The pagoda is an octahedron. Once you step into it, you just like walk into The Eight Diagrams. So remember this: turn right when going upstairs and turn left when going downstairs. Or you will have to walk the eight sides before finding the staircase. This way will save you the unnecessary walks. The Flower Pagoda is the most ancient architecture in Guangzhou, the Flower City, and a witness of Guangzhou's long history.
