Dance drama 'Yingge' set to premiere early next year
Update: 2024-10-24     Source: Yangcheng Evening News

Recently, the highly anticipated dance drama "Yingge" successfully completed its rehearsal at the Lingnan Theater of the Guangdong Song & Dance Theater . This production is the latest artistic work from the Guangdong Song & Dance Theater that delves into Lingnan culture and the excellent traditions of Chinese culture, following previous successes like the "Awakening Lion" , "and "Dragon Boat ." According to reports, the drama is now in the final stage of preparation for its debut, scheduled to perform in early 2025.

Inspired by the Chaoshan Yingge dance, "Yingge" is a large-scale ethnic dance drama aimed at revitalizing and interpreting the cultural memories of the Chaoshan people through the medium of art, while imbuing those cultural memories with new contemporary meanings. The drama embodies the unyielding national spirit that has been passed on for thousands of years by the Chaoshan people, who uphold the motto "Though thousands of foes may stand in my way, I will continue to forge ahead." Centered around the Yingge Dance, it intricately weaves elements of local customs and culture, such as wood carving, inlaid porcelain , iron-rod puppetry, Chao opera , Chao embroidery , and the "Stepping out of the Garden" ceremony, showcasing the vibrant tapestry of Chaoshan culture and allowing these cultural treasures to shine on stage.

During the rehearsal, the reporter observed actors wielding Yingge sticks, dancing to the rhythm of the music, with each movement brimming with power and grace. The dance fluctuates between boldness and delicacy, retaining the traditional elements of various Yingge styles while skillfully integrating modern stage artistry, presenting traditional aspects in a way that appeals to contemporary aesthetics.

To deeply explore the contemporary value of Yingge culture, the production team conducted field research in Chaozhou and Jieyang during this year's Spring Festival, focusing on Chaozhou culture, Yingge culture, and ancestral hall culture. There, they visited countless intangible cultural heritage projects, including the Yingge dance, Chaozhou gongs and drums performances, Chao opera, Chao embroidery, inlaid porcelain, wood carving, Kung Fu tea, gold gilding, and iron-rod puppetry, engaging with experts and inheritors to gain a thorough understanding of the origins and development of Chaozhou culture.

Fans of the drama are eagerly anticipating the performance, expressing hopes that 'Yingge' will bring the treasures of our ancestors into new realms and out to sea!"
