On January 29, the melodies of classical music resonated at the Cantonese Opera Art Museum, Guangdong Museum, and Canton Tower in Guangzhou.
This was an outdoor activity of the 2024 Youth Music Culture The Greater Bay Area (YMCG), featuring over 80 young musicians from more than 50 music conservatories and 16 professional orchestras around the world. With different forms of compositions, they performed classical masterpieces by musicians such as Paul Dukas, Ludwig van Beethoven, George Frideric Handel, and Aaron Copland, integrating Western classical masterpieces into Guangzhou's landmarks and historical culture.
Furthermore, these young musicians and their faculty also enjoyed Cantonese opera, Chaozhou wood carving, ethnic costumes at the Pearl River Delta, as well as a bird's-eye view of the city, exploring the rich cultural heritage and modernization here.
Gareth Davies, Principal Flute player with the London Symphony Orchestra and one of the tutors of the 2024 YMCG, thought that Cantonese opera was charming. Davies said that he had listened to many Western composers' pieces inspired by Cantonese opera, and he also encountered this kind of art form when playing and recording music for a film.
Such outdoor activities have been a regular feature of the YMCG in recent years. It aims to take music out of the concert hall, into the city, and closer to the public.
