The UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Institute for Lifelong Learning held an online high-level meeting for mayors of global learning cities in Berlin, Germany on Oct 31, which Guangzhou took part in.

Jiang Zhitao, deputy mayor of the Guangzhou municipal people's government, delivered a video speech at the meeting. 

He gave an introduction to the achievements the city has made in improving the education system that serves lifelong learning for all people in recent years, as well as the strategic goals of the Guangzhou Education Modernization 2035 plan. He also discussed Guangzhou's status as a famous historical and cultural city with a 2,000-year history, the birthplace of the ancient Maritime Silk Road, as well as the frontier of China'sall-around opening up to the outside world.

In November 2021, Guangzhou applied to UNESCO for membership in the global learning cities network. In September this year, Guangzhou was chosen as the only Chinese city to be included in the Members of the Global Learning Cities Network list released by UNESCO.

This was a high-level meeting in which newly selected cities were invited by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning to participate.
