The Port of Guangzhou has become the world's fifth largest port with annual cargo traffics of more than 400 million tons. It is also mainland China's third port to handle more than 400 million tons of goods annually, after the Port of Shanghai and the Port of Zhoushan in Ningbo City.
During the term of the 12th Five-Year Plan, Guangzhou will pour approximately 20 billion yuan into the expansion of deep water terminals at Nansha for bulk and container ships and into the port logistics and shipping service industries, with a view to establishing the city as an international shipping center.
As Guangzhou authorities increase their efforts to promote the development of the port economy, many major international shipping and logistics firms have set up regional headquarters in Guangzhou, and Maersk, PSA Corporation and many other shipping and logistics giants, have been involved in the port development and operations.
At present, Guangzhou has shipping links with more than 350 ports all over the world, and has been paired up with 14 international ports. It currently operates 31 direct lines to Europe, North America, Australia, the Red Sea, and Southeast Asia. All of the world's top 10 shipping companies offer shipping services in Guangzhou.
According to Guangzhou Port Group Chairman Chen Hongxian, during the term of the 12th Five-Year Plan, the Port of Guangzhou will spend about 20 billion yuan on the expansion of outbound navigation channels and the construction of six berths for gains and general merchandise ships with a gross deadweight tonnage of 50,000 to 100,000 tons at Nansha.
The two deep-water berths for ships with a gross deadweight tonnage of 100,000 tons, which are part of Phase III works of the container terminal at Nansha, will be completed by the end of the term of the 12th Five-Year Plan, and construction is expected to begin on a rail link to the port in the near future and be completed with related depot facilities by 2013.
The Port of Guangzhou's annual cargo traffic is expected to top 500 million tons and its container throughput is projected to exceed 18 million TEUs in 2015.
